Plants, animals and people all need each other. Plants produce the oxygen that people and animals breathe, while people and animals breathe out the carbon dioxide that plants need to survive.

But trees also play a very important role in the battle against global warming and climate change.

Through photosynthesis, trees take CO2 from the air, nutrients and water from the soil and, using energy from the sun, produce wood.

When wood is burned or decays, the CO2 is released again as part of the natural carbon cycle.

The Amazon Rainforest has been described as the "Lungs of our Planet" because it produces more than 20% of the world's oxygen by continuously recycling CO2.

And it's the ability of growing forests to capture CO2 which can help counter the greenhouse effect.

Did you know:

A tree does not reach its most productive stage of carbon storage for about 10 years

Two mature trees can provide enough oxygen for a family of four.
