Since the programme began, The Mersey Forest has increased woodland cover by 64%, created over 150 new jobs, and has involved hundreds of thousands of people in creating a massive positive change for the environment.
The Mersey Forest is on the way to delivering its vision of diverse, attractive, healthy and productive landscapes.
The following highlights some of the measurable achievements since the project began.
- 2,900 hectares of new woodland have been planted, equivalent to an area the size of Warrington.
- Approximately 10 million trees have been planted.
- 800 hectares of new, non-woodland habitats have been created.
- 90km of hedgerow and 400km of new access routes have been created.
- Hundreds of schools have been involved in the creation of the Forest.
- 35,000 events have been organised as part of the Forest’s community programme.
Through partnership working and our focus on delivering action on the ground much has been achieved, but there is still much to do. We are still only part way through the creation of The Mersey Forest. Whilst our work does have immediate impacts, it is also about handing on a better place to future generations, after we, individually and together, have made a difference.
