Green Streets: Northwood evaluation
An evaluation with Northwood residents as a precursor to a potential 'Green Streets' project has revealed an appetite for street trees in the local area.
61 households responded to a door-to-door evaluation of four Northwood streets including Roughwood Drive. Visitors to a multi-agency environment including local community groups such as Northwood Mums - who have a local allotment - also filled out the evaluation forms.
Residents commented that they felt street trees would "bring the community together" and give the neighbourhood a "healthier look and feel".
62% of residents said that having more trees would mean they'd spend more time outdoors, and three quarters agreed that a Green Streets project would benefit the area.
The wide-ranging evaluation also revealed a strong sense of community in the area with two thirds "feeling pride" in their area, and 85% agreeing that "the neighbourhood gets on well".
The evaluation process itself was also praised, with one resident confirming that "involving the community has been a great benefit to this project as we need to make the decisions for our area."
The Mersey Forest, Knowsley Council and independent Housing Association KHT will continue their partnership working by carrying out an indepth consultation on the planting of a number of street trees in the area. It is also hoped to provide water butts to residents, who can then use the collected rain water as a sustainable method of watering their street trees.
£28,000 has been put towards tree planting in the area (which included funding the evaluation) by KHT's Advantage Fund.
