Greening the City demonstration projects sought

12 April 2010

Liverpool City Council are asking existing community groups to be considered for two exciting demonstration projects as part of Greening the City. These could be community greening projects on un-used land, which provide opportunities for communities to learn more about growing plants, fruit and veg, as well as getting to know neighbours at the same time.

There is a new funding pot where groups can apply to get money and advice to turn grot spots into attractive and productive areas where communities can learn new skills, increase their physical activity and meet new people.

Following on from the success of the Year of the Environment, between now and the end of May 2010 the selection process will identify two projects to go forward, with grants of up to £20,000 each to tackle green initiatives and environmental issues within local neighbourhoods. The selected projects will start in June 2010 and must be finished by March 2011.

This Greening the City: Demonstration Project aims to develop a city-wide approach to greening of local un-used land securing opportunities for community involvement and management of these spaces local areas. Improvements should be led and delivered by local communities.

Projects could include:
• Growing fruit and vegetables;
• Planting an orchard;
• Tree, shrub and wildflower planting;
• Making an area look nice;
• Ecological improvements;
• Educational projects which raise awareness of environmental issues; and
• Creation of an area of public space/communal garden.
