In memory of Tom Butlin (1982 - 2020)

27 March 2020

  • 2018 - Tom Butlin, GIS Co-ordinator
  • 2018 - Team Jun 2018
  • 2019 - Community Tree Planting Nr Source Of Mersey - New Mills
Our friend and colleague, Tom Butlin, will be laid to rest today in a woodland burial in the Peak District.

Tom lost his life in a mountaineering accident in Torridon in the Scottish Mountains last month. This is our tribute to him:

Tom joined us at The Mersey Forest in 2006 on a recommendation from his friend and fellow band member Mike Bray. Director, Paul Nolan, met Tom on a sunny day outside Waterloo Station and Tom joined us soon after. From the first meeting Tom's intelligence shone through. Paul knew he would be a great addition to our team, and so he was.

Tom started as our Geographic Information System Coordinator, gathering, analyzing and mapping data to create maps and provide data that could be used to support and communicate the work of the Forest Team.

Tom's arrival transformed how we worked. Very quickly we all gave up pretending to use GIS. Tom would answer a query or provide a map to show impact before we had even started to think how it might be done.

Tom became an expert in the Green Infrastructure mapping and analysis. His work supported a transformation in how we think about planning the natural environment. His groundbreaking work took him across the country and to work with international partners.

Anyone who worked with Tom for any length of time could not fail to be impressed by his work, his ability to find answers and his clear, logical approach to solving problems.

Tom is forever woven into the work of Mersey Forest Team. We miss him.

I am so sorry to hear this sad news. I never met Tom face to face but we corresponded briefly about the Green Infrastructure Valuation Tool, and I was in awe of his amazing GIS green infrastructure maps. The tools and methods he developed will live on to help the rest of us in our work to protect and enhance green space for everyone to use - more important now than ever. My deepest sympathy to all his family, friends and colleagues. From Alison Smith at the University of Oxford.
