Risley Moss launched as London 2012 "Inspire" woodland

01 October 2011

Warrington's Risley Moss Local Nature Reserve has been unveiled as the first of seven "Running Rings" sites across The Mersey Forest.

As part of this London 2012 "Inspire" endorsed project, The Mersey Forest is creating a series of circular routes in local community woodlands to help people get active and enjoy nature.

To kick things off, a "Running Rings" activity morning was held in May 2011, with families joining The Mersey Forest, Warrington Borough Council and local running club Spectrum Striders to walk or run anything from a couple of hundred metres to a mile and receive their time and certificate.

Cllr Geoff Settle, Chair of the Warrington Nature Conservation Forum, ran the 580 metre course, and commented: "This is a great little course for everyone. Beginners can start by simply walking, progress to jogging and then speeding up when their fitness improves."

Cllr Settle also joined The Mersey Forest Steering Group this summer, enjoying his first meeting held at Delamere Forest.

£14,000 towards new facilities

Risley Moss will benefit from £14,000 funding secured by The Mersey Forest for Warrington Borough Council for new facilities to encourage as many people as possible to visit the nature reserve.

Through a Forestry Commission Woodland Improvement Grant, the site will benefit from seven picnic benches, already installed, and seating, interpretation boards and Running Rings routemarkers to be added soon.
