Southport 'Forest School' goes from strength to strength

24 September 2010

Green Southport school Norwood Primary has taken its acclaimed programme of outdoor lessons to the next level by planting more woodland for its pupils to explore and learn from.

A Merseyside first

Norwood was the first school in Merseyside to offer all of its children 'Forest School' woodland lessons to help them re-connect with nature, bringing the curriculum to life using everything from camp fires to creepy crawlies.

Now the school has expanded its woodland 'classroom' with the planting of a new generation of willow, rowan and elder trees that will give the youngsters a bigger area to enjoy and will provide materials for willow-weaving and other activities.

Climate fund

The new trees, planted with the school's Year 3 pupils, were provided by Foundation, a climate fund for the Northwest which uses donations from businesses, individuals and other organisations to support community-based carbon reduction projects across the region.

1 million children outdoors

The improvements at Norwood Primary are also supported by Natural England, who are aiming to get 1 million children outdoors as part of a national project to encourage youngsters to play in the natural environment.
