Super street trees for Sefton

02 October 2011

Sefton will be brighter and healthier from this winter onwards with the arrival of up to 200 new street trees thanks to The Mersey Forest.

The local community will be placed at the heart of the project thanks to a grassroots consultation which will see Mersey Forest staff taking to the streets of Bootle and Seaforth to discuss what species of trees local residents would like to see. Residents will also be supported to get involved in watering the trees and helping look after them.

As well as door-to-door chats and residents' surveys, The Mersey Forest will also be taking advantage of previous links made with local groups as part of the community-led planting of more than 180 street trees in the south Sefton area since 2008 (pictured above). Once again Sefton Council's Trees and Woodlands officers will lead on arranging the planting and supplying match funding to ensure that the scheme runs smoothly.

Funding for the project is provided by Section 106 monies through Sefton Council, the national Big Tree Plant campaign, and the Forestry Commission through the Setting the Scene for Growth programme funded by the Northwest Regional Development Agency.
