Treeless streets in Knowsley have been transformed into a community-friendly environment for residents, with more than a hundred new street trees planted in Northwood.
The Mersey Forest, Knowsley Housing Trust (KHT) and Knowsley Council worked closely with local residents to make the project happen, with over 140 extra heavy standard ornamental and shade trees planted since January 2011.
The planting followed indepth community engagement, with local residents involved through an evaluation of how they perceive the local area (see previous newsletter story), and face-to-face consultation about the new street trees through a door-knocking campaign.
Funding for the project came from KHT, Knowsley Council and the Forestry Commission through their Setting The Scene For Growth programme funded by the Northwest Regional Development Agency.
The Mersey Forest works to create a network of trees and green spaces across Merseyside and North Cheshire. This is especially important in previously treeless areas like Northwood where communities can most benefit from them.
Street trees not only make a huge aesthetic impact, but also help to reduce air pollution and bring communities closer by supporting residents to work together to help water and look after their trees.
