Church Wood is 8 acres of privately owned woodland, planted almost 100 years ago and consisting of turkey oak, ash, beech and pine. It is near to the centre of Whitegate village and borders the original driveway to Vale Royal Abbey.

Church Wood Conservation Group joined The Mersey Forest's Community Contracting Initiative in April 2002. The group meet regularly to carry out practical conservation work to conserve and enhance this attractive woodland area. The principal tasks carried out include tree felling, thinning and replanting and removal of overhanging branches and dangerous trees within the woodland. The group are also undertaking hedgerow planting and fencing works to improve site boundaries and aim to improve footpaths within the woodland to improve access throughout the year.
